A new, British-designed smartphone aimed at the seniors’ market from AAA members Easyphones Ltd has brought together the three features that older people themselves have asked for in a phone – simplicity of use, customer support and robust design.
Bath-based Easyphones Ltd have been supplying specially designed telephones to seniors for over 10 years, selling over 10,000 units in the process – making them the biggest UK-based specialist providers in this market. Their new “ToughPhone”, they say, brings together all of the features that have made them such a success to date, plus several new ones that have resulted directly from customer feedback.
Says CEO, Michael Kerstein: “Because we also run our own customer support and back-up service, we get a lot of direct and very detailed feedback from our users, and the new phone builds in their most popular suggestions.
“There’s a widespread – and frankly ageist – assumption that older people don’t want the functionality of modern smartphones and are happier with old fashioned ‘dumb phones’. That’s just not true. There is a new generation of seniors coming through, and a great many of them really do want features like emails, video calls, camera, torch, text messages and access to the Internet.
“What we have done is create an interface which offers all those features… but with greater clarity – using bigger icons and push buttons for example – to allow for those whose eyesight is not so sharp or who have less agile fingers.
“Users have a choice of menus, so those who really do just want to make calls to a handful of family members can do so. But anyone looking for the full functionality of a modern smartphone can have that too. They simply download the apps they want from a menu to tailor their phone precisely to their needs.”
Users can even directly access a carer service and a local “trusted trader”. There is also an emergency “SOS” button which, when pressed, send their GPS location to a designated family member or carer.
The other key feature of the new phone that has resulted directly from customer feedback is its extremely robust design. It comes with a highly durable casing and toughened touch screen designed to withstand knocks, drops and even immersion into water.
That makes it ideal when out and about… and because it’s sold contract free, you can use any Sim card, so you even take it on holiday with you.
“Older customers also look for quality customer support,” adds Michael Kerstein. “Specifically, they really appreciate the fact that they can call us and speak directly to a helpful and friendly voice from here in the UK. So that is also built into the purchase price.”
